Men's basketball faces off against Chinaby Colin Whited on September 6, 2009 Start of first quarter China gets a quick lay-up off the jump ball to take a 2-0 lead. Jon Mowl answers with a three and Anton Jackson adds a put-back lay-in. S Sekoe White makes one of two free throws to give USA a 6-2 advantage. China answers with a three and two fast break lay-ups to take a 9-6 lead. USA then turns four consecutive Chinese turnovers into eight transition points to take a 14-9 lead, forcing China to take a time-out. Out the Chinese timeout, USA continues to force turnovers and turning them into transition points. Extending their lead to 29-18. The USA, however, are finding themselves in foul trouble. Sekoe White and Brian Cronin each have two fouls. China is making a run, though USA continues to lead 31-25. End of 1st quarter USA leads 33-25. Robert Haney, Jr. and White each lead USA with eight points apiece. The Chinese are playing resiliently. Li Gang Zhang had 14 first quarter points for the Chinese. Despite USA forcing turnovers, China has made some difficult shots to stay in the game. Start of second quarter USA starts the quarter with a great feed from Haney to Edlin Dorn. Bradley Miller sinks the first of two free throws, and Dorn grabs the miss and puts it in for two. Jon Mowl makes a nice steal for a lay-up. Time-out China. USA leads 42-27 with 8:29 left in the second period. After the Chinese timeout After each team swaps turnovers twice, USA gets a steal and turns it into a lay-up by Dorn. Another nice feed from Haney to Dorn puts the USA up 46-27 with 6:10 to play in the half. 6:05 mark of the second quarter Mike Kent disrupts a perfectly executed pick and roll by China, but USA doesn't capitalize on the transition opportunity. Sekoe White answers a Chinese lay-up by banking in a 15-foot jumper. China gets their tenth second-chance point of the evening. The U.S. is uncharacteristically boxing out poorly today. After Jon Mowl makes a steal, Brian Cronin drills a trey. China then answers with a three of their own. 51-37, USA. A loose ball causes a pile-up, which draws a loud cheer from the crowd. Good hustle is being exhibited by both teams. USA continues to lead 53-39 with a minute left in the half. Halftime USA leads China 53-42. Dorn is making his presence felt in the paint, with 12 points. Haney was scoreless in the second period, going into halftime with eight points. Jon Mowl is playing intelligent basketball, playing tough defense, making nifty passes, and scoring seven points. White has eight points, but picked up his third foul late in the second quarter. Start of third quarter White is playing with three fouls. It'll be interesting to see if it affects his game. Right on cue, White turns a steal into a lay-up. After the U.S. get two lay-ups off long rebounds, China goes on an 8-0 run. Timeout USA. 63-55, U.S. The Americans answer with a steal off China's inbounds pass. 65-55 with 5:45 left in the quarter. 5:30 left in the third period China is in the bonus. The U.S. needs to quit fouling. 4:45 mark of the third China answers a White lay-up with a three. 69-58, USA. White takes a steal and throws it down for a dunk! The crowd goes wild! 71-58, USA with 3:30 left in the quarter. 2:45 left in the third China calls timeout. U.S. head coach Keith Westhoelter tells his team, "The game is ours now!" We'll see if that fires up the men. Both teams are playing a bit sloppy. 75-61 with 1:10 left in the quarter. End of the third quarter The U.S. leads China 77-64. White has 18 points, Dorn 14, and Haney 12. Li Gang Zhang is leading China with 24. Start of the fourth quarter China won't quit. They still trail by only 11, 66-77. Brian Cronin makes a beautiful pass to Haney for a lay-in. Haney adds a 15-foot baseline jumper. Sekoe White makes a steal and dunks it home, his second of the day! 85-67, USA with 6:40 left in the quarter. 5:20 left in the forth The U.S. continue to pressure the Chinese forcing turnovers and turning them into points. China looks tired. Mowl drills a three from the left corner. 91-71, USA. 3:00 left in the game Dorn, Haney, and Whit add back to back to back lay-ups. 97-74 USA. Dorn takes a Mowl miss and puts it in for two. Westhoelter takes Haney and White out of the game with 1:20 left in the game. End of game USA defeats China 103-77. The Americans weren't their best, but it was good enough to take the victory. White led the U.S. with 22 points and Dorn and Haney added 18 apiece. |
