Volleyball cruises to win against Argentina

The Americans faced minimal competition from Argentina during their match Friday that concluded round-robin play before four-team bracket play begins Saturday. The match served as practice for the U.S. before its rematch against Japan on Saturday. “The team took advantage of today’s match to practice and prepare for tomorrow,” team manager Colleen Farrell said. In the first set, the U.S. blazed ahead to a 20-4 lead, when Coach Lynn Ray Boren started to make substitutions to finish the set, 25-7. The points Argentina received were mostly off the Americans’ errors. “Today, we were able to practice on things we needed to improve before tomorrow,” Justine Jeter said. Kills from all the hitters kept the Americans cruising past Argentina’s efforts to rally. Blocks from Katelyn Reese and Valerie Trofimenkoff kept Argentina’s hits on their side, which gave the Americans’ back row defense some rest. The second set saw everybody on the roster playing. The U.S. won, 25-9. “We served well and tough today,” Johnson said. Setter Krystle Berrigan led the U.S. in the third set with all the substitutions playing the entire set. The Americans saw solid playing from the bench as they won the third set, 25-11, with a Paige Johnson block. “It was an easy match but a friendly one,” Jenny Cooper said. The Americans experienced a bit of the paparazzi treatment as they exited the gym to about a hundred students asking for photos. Amanda Krieger, a blonde, was a fan favorite. “This is why blondes have more fun!” she said. The Americans next play Japan, who beat the U.S., 3-1, earlier in round-robin play. The semifinal match is Saturday.
